It is with great pleasure that Equilibre announces the upcoming workshop on Behaviour, Welfare, Education and Mentality in Equines with Dr. Marthe Kiley-Worthington. The workshop will be held at our center in Santa Perpetua de Gaiá (Tarragona), on the 20th and 21st October 2012.
Dr. Marthe Kiley-Worthington (B.Sc.D.Phil. M.Phil. BHSAI, Fellow Girton College Cambridge) has spent her professional life researching the behavioural problems & welfare of mammals, and is one of the first and best known Animal Behaviour Consultants worldwide, with over 35 years experience.
Marthe spent her childhood in Kenya on farms, attended University in Scotland and then returned to East Africa to Makerere College, Kampala, Uganda (1955-60) with a Goldsmith scholarship. She was one of the first researchers studying the behaviour of large mammals in the field in Africa.
She returned to the UK to complete a doctorate on communication in domestic and wild mammals at Sussex University & then won a series of post doctoral fellowships to study the welfare of farm animals, develop an ethogram for cattle, distress in veal calves, thus was one of the first Animal Welfare Scientists. She returned to study wild eland and blesbok in South Africa while a professor at University of Pretoria.

Marthe has developed the cooperative teaching of mammals, teaches, works & rides horses from novice to Grand Prix in dressage and International Endurance. Furthermore she was one of the first Animal Behavioural & Welfare Consultants and has been in practice since 1970.
She has authored over 70 scientific papers along with publishing at least 7 insightful books. Click here to see Publications

Course Outline
Theoretical course with practical exercises with horses

Day 1.
What mental attributes do horses have, and reasons why we know this.
What is Conditional Anthropomorphism and how can it be applied.
How equines perceive the world. Study of the sense receptors of equines compared to humans.
Study of equines body, physiology, emotions, and cognition, and how to begin to answer the question of what it is to be a horse.
Equine Needs and how we know what they are.
Equine Communication.
Instinct and Learning in theory and practise.
Feet , trimming and shoeing or not . Natural Balance shoeing why and what is it.
Discussion of each subject.

Day 2. How to put the theory into practise.
Six private lessons for participants with their horses,or ours.
Behavioural problems and how to solve them. How to improve your relations with horses. Handling, Working from the ground, at liberty or lunging, teaching different movements.
Riding lessons for different disciplines. Importance of Relaxation, Balance and Rhythm.
Driving, working on the land, horse dancing, .
Discussion after each lesson with participants.
